Behind-the-Scenes Look: Baymeadows Movers Partners with Chipman and OMA to Clear Out Legacy Equipment from AMC Theatres
Most people walk into a movie theater with their mind on the movie they're about to watch. They see the giant screen, plush seats, and maybe the smell of fresh popcorn. What they don't see is everything happening behind the scenes to bring that experience to life—or what it takes when it's time to replace decades of equipment and make room for the future.
Not long ago, Baymeadows Movers was able to partner with Chipman Relocation & Logistics on a unique commercial moving project via our membership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA). As a team, we helped with the removal of older projection equipment from several AMC Theatre locations. It wasn't your standard commercial move. It required careful planning, specialized equipment, experienced crews, and seamless coordination between trusted relocation partners.
Moves like these are among the reasons we love what we do. No two commercial moves are ever exactly alike, and that's what makes our work engaging.
Every Commercial Move Has a Story
One of the finest parts of commercial moving is the diversity.
During one week we're moving an entire school before students come back for the new year. The next we're delivering physical therapy equipment to a new healthcare facility. Then we find ourselves inside a movie theater, methodically dismantling and removing equipment that has entertained millions of people over the years.
This AMC project was particularly memorable because it involved removing large digital cinema projection systems, together with several pieces of historic 35mm projection equipment. Walking into the projection booths felt like traveling back in time. Some of the film projectors and reels had been part of the movie-going experience long before digital projection had become the industry standard.
For film lovers, it was captivating.
For our crew, it was a reminder that every piece of equipment we move carries its own story.
Great Projects Begin with Careful Planning
Moves like this do not begin when the moving truck shows up.
Long before the first projector is taken down, our team plans out logistics, scheduling, building access, equipment requirements, manpower, and safety planning.
Working alongside Chipman Relocation & Logistics, we oversaw every phase of the project to make sure each theater could be completed safely and efficiently. One of the greatest advantages of being part of the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) is gaining access to a nationwide network of highly experienced commercial movers who uphold the same commitment to professionalism and customer service. By blending Chipman's national relocation expertise with Baymeadows Movers' local knowledge and project management experience, we were able to complete the work smoothly from start to finish.
Movie theaters weren't designed with equipment removal in mind.
Projection booths tend to be tucked away on upper levels with slim passageways, tight doorways, and limited access. A few sites have elevators, while others don't. Relocating large projection systems through those spaces involves much more than simply putting them on a dolly and heading for the truck.
Every challenge needs to be identified before any work begins.
That's when experience truly matters.
It's All About Far More Than Just Muscle
Many people assume moving heavy equipment is simply about strength.
The honest truth is that commercial moving hinges on preparation, technique, and having the right tools for the job.
Projects like the AMC equipment removal call for specialized dollies, rigging equipment, lift systems, protective materials, and seasoned crews who know how to safely maneuver oversized equipment through narrow spaces.
Each projector had to be meticulously disconnected, protected, maneuvered through the building, and carefully loaded for transport.
Many of these systems are not only heavy—they're also extremely delicate. A single careless bump into a doorway or uneven transition could cause significant damage.
Communication and patience are as important as physical strength.
Preserving the Building Is Just as Important
While our focus is on safely moving equipment, we're equally focused on protecting the customer's facility.
Commercial buildings represent a sizable investment, and even small repairs can become costly and disruptive.
Once a job is done, our goal is for customers to remember how easy the whole experience felt, not the moving process itself.
Team Effort Makes the Difference
Sizable commercial moving projects are never a solo undertaking.
Each member of the crew has a specific role, and communication is key from start to finish.
One team member may be maneuvering equipment through a doorway while another manages the load. Someone else is monitoring clearances, while another team member is preparing the next piece for transport.
When experienced crews work as a team, there's a rhythm that takes shape. That's something that can't be developed overnight.
Seeing our crew work together was a great example of what happens when veteran movers share the same commitment to safety, communication, and customer service.
A Little Levity Along the Way
Even during high-pressure commercial projects, it's essential to enjoy the experience.
Being employed inside movie theaters absolutely had its perks.
Our team couldn't help sneaking downstairs for some movie snacks between jobs on the project. Having spent the day behind the scenes where not many people ever get to go, popcorn for some reason tasted even better.
Those moments make long workdays memorable and remind us that while we take our work seriously, we also love what we do.
Commercial Moving Goes Beyond Transportation
Plenty of people assume moving companies simply load trucks and unload them somewhere else.
Commercial moving is so much more than that.
These projects often involve logistics planning, inventory management, warehousing, project management, scheduling, specialized equipment handling, and coordinating multiple contractors.
Every customer has different needs.
Certain businesses need to relocate hundreds of employees across a single weekend.
Others need sensitive medical equipment relocated without disruption.
Certain projects happen overnight to minimize downtime.
Others—like the AMC project—entail carefully removing specialized equipment from unique environments.
Every move requires flexibility, foresight, and problem solving.
At Baymeadows Movers, when a customer asks, "Can you help with this?" our first instinct is almost always, "Let's figure out how."
Hands-On Experience Builds Confidence
For decades, Baymeadows Movers has faithfully served Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, and experience has taught us that great projects consistently come down to the same fundamentals:
Preparation.
Communication.
Professionalism.
Trust.
Our customers know we'll arrive prepared, communicate throughout the project, respect their property, and fix problems instead of causing them.
No matter if we're working inside schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, government facilities, entertainment venues, or commercial campuses, our approach is always the same.
Protect the customer.
Protect the equipment.
Finish the work safely.
Leave the site better than we found it.
Protecting a Piece of Movie History
One of the unexpected highlights of this project was encountering some of the original 35mm projection systems that once brought so many movies to life.
Well before streaming services and digital cinema, these machines created memorable experiences for generations of moviegoers.
Working alongside them gave our crew a genuine appreciation for how much technology has advanced over the years.
It's not every day that a moving company has the chance to help retire a small piece of entertainment history.
Speaking for us, it truly was an experience that we'll never forget.
